About the Role

The Hygiene Technician will help safeguard workplace health and safety by conducting occupational hygiene assessments, maintaining monitoring equipment and ensuring instruments provide accurate and reliable data.

The successful candidates will also provide occupational hygiene support when required, including air sampling, noise monitoring, chemical exposure assessments, workplace ergonomics and ventilation assessments.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

• Maintaining and calibrating occupational hygiene monitoring equipment.
• Conducting routine inspections and preventive maintenance.
• Cleaning monitoring instruments to maintain accuracy.
• Checking and replacing batteries when required.
• Verifying instrument sensitivity, responsiveness and functionality.
• Replacing filters on air sampling equipment.
• Checking data-logging functions.
• Ensuring monitoring-device software remains updated.
• Keeping accurate records of calibration, maintenance and repairs.
• Storing monitoring equipment safely to prevent damage.

Occupational Hygiene Support

Duties may also include:

• Conducting air sampling for dust, gases, vapours and other airborne contaminants.
• Monitoring workplace noise levels.
• Assessing exposure to hazardous chemicals.
• Conducting workplace ergonomic assessments.
• Evaluating ventilation systems.
• Assessing PPE use and suitability.
• Working with occupational health and safety professionals.
• Supporting responses to occupational hazard emergencies.

Safety and Compliance

The role requires the employee to:

• Follow all safety, health and environmental requirements.
• Report unsafe practices and workplace risks.
• Maintain good housekeeping standards.
• Participate in risk assessments and safety initiatives.
• Support the close-out of safety actions.

Requirements

Applicants should have:

• Grade 12
• National Certificate in Occupational Hygiene or related field (NQF 5)
• Registration with the Southern African Institute of Occupational Hygiene at Technologist level, or an Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental from the Minerals Council of South Africa.
• National Diploma in Occupational Hygiene or related field (NQF 6) is preferred.
• International ICertOHTA Certificate or BOHS CertOH is advantageous.
• Valid South African Code B driver’s licence.

Experience and Technical Knowledge

Applicants should have:

• 3–5 years’ relevant experience maintaining occupational hygiene equipment.
• Experience in a mining environment is preferred.
• Knowledge of occupational hygiene and mining safety regulations.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials and their potential health effects.
• Understanding of sampling and workplace monitoring techniques.
• Knowledge of occupational hygiene equipment and instruments.
• Understanding of workplace risk assessments and control measures.
