About the Role
The Donor Care Officer is responsible for collecting quality and safe blood and blood products at fixed or mobile blood drives. The role focuses on donor care, phlebotomy, stakeholder engagement, compliance, and meeting collection targets in line with SANBS standards and SOPs.
Key Responsibilities
Financial & Resource Management
- Manage consumable usage to meet cost-per-unit targets
- Maintain and validate equipment, ensuring timely repairs
- Monitor and report stock discrepancies and usage trends
Donor & Stakeholder Care
- Welcome and assist donors throughout the donation process
- Guide donors through registration and medical assessments
- Address donor queries, complaints, and feedback professionally
- Coach team members on customer service excellence
Clinical & Operational Duties
- Collect whole blood and apheresis units to meet targets
- Conduct donor screening, physical checks, and risk assessments
- Perform phlebotomy and ensure correct blood volume collection
- Provide donor care during and after donation
- Complete all required documentation accurately
- Initiate emergency care (First Aid / CPR) when required
Learning, Growth & Leadership
- Perform Clinic Supervisor duties when required
- Participate in staff meetings and training initiatives
- Support staff competency, CPDs, and performance observations
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to SANBS, SHEQ, and operational policies
- Maintain accurate staff, donor, and equipment records
- Manage medical waste and maintain a safe clinical environment
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Diploma or Degree in General Nursing Sciences
- Valid Code B or EB manual driver’s licence
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years Registered Professional Nursing experience
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of SANBS policies and procedures
- Understanding of blood transfusion standards in South Africa
- Strong communication, teamwork, and donor care skills
