About the Position
The ECA Emergency Care Assistant will provide emergency patient care while supporting safe, efficient and professional emergency medical service delivery. The successful candidate will be responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, providing treatment within their scope of practice, maintaining accurate patient records and ensuring that vehicles, medical equipment and supplies remain ready for use.
The role also involves working closely with emergency care professionals and medical officers, maintaining compliance with HPCSA requirements and delivering compassionate care to patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Responding to emergency and non-emergency calls within the required response times.
- Assessing and treating patients according to ECA training, HPCSA protocols and scope of practice.
- Consulting with an ECP or medical officer where required by the ECA protocol.
- Completing Electronic Patient Report Forms (EPRFs) accurately for every patient treated.
- Recording Netcare 911 call case numbers on relevant patient documentation.
- Maintaining patient confidentiality and treating patients and families with dignity and compassion.
- Keeping families informed about patient treatment where appropriate.
- Recording patient valuables accurately.
- Maintaining drug registers and conducting required drug stock counts.
- Escalating cases that exceed the employee’s scope of practice or competency.
- Ensuring interventions requiring reported practice are presented to an ECP or medical officer within the required period.
- Checking emergency vehicles and equipment before each shift.
- Maintaining the cleanliness and serviceability of vehicles and equipment.
- Reporting damaged, missing or stolen equipment.
- Maintaining rechargeable equipment and batteries.
- Ensuring adequate medical stock and replacing supplies after calls where possible.
- Completing all required company and legal documentation.
- Participating in CME training and maintaining CPD compliance.
- Supporting in-service training and community projects where required.
- Following health and safety requirements and reporting workplace injuries or unusual incidents.
- Using safe and considerate driving practices while operating company vehicles.
- Wearing appropriate protective equipment when attending emergency scenes.
- Maintaining professional customer service and positive relationships with patients, families and colleagues.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12.
- Current HPCSA registration with the Professional Board of Emergency Care Personnel as an Emergency Care Assistant (ECA).
- Current with HPCSA CPG updates.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be over 21 years old.
- A valid PDRP for passengers.
- A valid Code 10 driver’s licence.
Experience and Skills
The following would be beneficial:
- At least 1 year of post-graduate patient care experience in an operational environment.
- Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office.
- Good interpersonal relationship skills.
- Analytical and technical skills.
- Ability to work effectively in an emergency care environment.

Working Conditions
The position requires flexibility to work according to operational requirements, including:
- Weekend shifts.
- Public holiday shifts.
- Night duty.
- Other flexible working hours as required.
The role may also require working in underground areas where applicable.
