Job Overview

FlySafair is inviting suitably qualified and experienced pilots to apply for three permanent First Officer positions at its bases in Johannesburg, Durban, Lanseria and Cape Town.

The successful candidates will report to the Fleet Captain and assist in ensuring the safe, efficient and professional operation of flights in accordance with company procedures and applicable aviation regulations.

The First Officer will support the Captain in flight preparation, aircraft navigation, operational decision-making, safety monitoring and the completion of all required flight documentation.

This opportunity is suited to qualified commercial pilots with the required flying hours, multi-crew experience and a valid South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) Class 1 medical certificate.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification.
• SACAA Commercial Pilot Licence (essential).
• SACAA Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) preferred.
• Valid SACAA Class 1 medical certificate.
• At least 1,500 flying hours, including 500 hours of multi-turbine time.
• Multi-crew experience.
• Knowledge of applicable SACAA and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regulations.
• Knowledge of ICAO Doc 8186 and commercial and airline transport pilot licensing requirements.
• South African citizenship, with proof of identity.
• Valid South African passport.
• Valid South African driver’s licence and own transport.
• No criminal record.
• Willingness to undergo drug and alcohol testing.
• Willingness to sign applicable training bonds.
• Ability to work irregular hours according to a roster.

Key Responsibilities

The First Officer will assist the Captain in maintaining flight safety and ensuring compliance with FlySafair’s operating procedures.

Flight Operations

• Monitor aircraft systems, flight paths and navigation.
• Conduct required checks and procedures before, during and after flights.
• Ensure compliance with aviation regulations and company policies.
• Maintain continuous awareness of the aircraft’s position, altitude, speed and heading.
• Identify and report potential hazards, abnormal instrument readings and deviations from the planned flight path.
• Assist the Captain with operational and administrative duties.
• Assume command when required in the event of the Captain’s incapacitation.

Pre-Flight Duties

• Review flight routes, briefing documents and weather forecasts.
• Assess destination and alternate airport conditions.
• Complete the required pre-flight checks and documentation.
• Work with the Captain to review fuel requirements, alternate airports and operational restrictions.

In-Flight Duties

• Perform and monitor normal, abnormal and emergency checklists.
• Cross-check flight instruments and ensure that appropriate procedures are followed.
• Conduct radio communications when required.
• Inform the Captain immediately of safety concerns or unusual aircraft indications.
• Support safe navigation and efficient flight operations.

Post-Flight Duties

• Complete all post-flight procedures in accordance with the Operations Manual and Flight Crew Operating Manual.
• Submit relevant operational documentation and safety reports, including IQSMS reports where applicable.
• Ensure all required records are accurate and complete.

Professional Conduct

• Maintain high standards of discipline, integrity and professional appearance.
• Support effective communication and teamwork among crew members.
• Help maintain crew morale and operational efficiency.
• Keep up to date with applicable aviation regulations and company operating manuals.
