About the Position
The Assistant Accountant will be responsible for maintaining the integrity and accuracy of financial transactions in support of SANBS operational objectives.
The role involves assisting the Financial Accountant with accounting processes, monitoring clearing accounts, processing financial transactions, supporting audits and resolving finance-related queries.
Key Responsibilities
Financial and Cost Accounting
The successful candidate will:
- Assist the Financial Accountant with processing monthly journals.
- Process journals relating to bank charges, interest, salaries, adjusting entries, operating expenditure, prepayments, deposits and accruals.
- Reallocate expenses such as company cell phones, travel and other operating costs to the appropriate General Ledger accounts.
- Process employee expense claims against the relevant profit and cost centres.
- Verify expense claims against company guidelines and HR policies.
- Report abnormalities identified in General Ledger account balances.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Assist with ensuring the completeness of the monthly trial balance for financial reporting.
- Clear accounting queries and prepare account analyses when required.
- Assist with preparing documents and reports needed for the audit process.
Clearing Accounts
The Assistant Accountant will also:
- Post supplier costs and customer refunds paid manually through the bank to the relevant Ledger accounts.
- Post manually paid expense claims to the correct Ledger accounts and cost centres.
- Work closely with Accounts Payable to ensure documentation required for payments and month-end accruals is submitted.
- Report outstanding issues to the Financial Accountant.
Ad Hoc Finance Responsibilities
Duties will include:
- Supporting the Accounts Payable Manager with accruals and supplier payment-related queries.
- Working with the National Fixed Asset Manager on asset-related matters.
- Assisting the National Debtors Manager with customer refunds and debtors clearing account queries.
- Assisting with stock reconciliations and following up on stock-related queries when required.
SAP and Stakeholder Responsibilities
The role will also require the successful candidate to:
- Maintain relationships with cost centre owners.
- Follow up on outstanding queries to ensure financial information is correctly posted on SAP.
- Report SAP-related problems to the Financial Accountant and Information Systems (CIT) department.
- Support improvements in system efficiency and financial processing.

Minimum Requirements
Education
- BCom Accounting degree
Experience
- 1–2 years’ prior work experience in a finance position
- Experience with General Ledger reconciliations

Who Can Apply?
