About the Trainee Controller Learnership

The Trainee Controller will receive training to support the safe and efficient movement of petroleum products through Transnet’s pipeline network.

The role involves operating specialised equipment according to scheduled programmes and instructions, while taking into account product volume and quality, employee safety, company assets and customer requirements.

Trainees will develop practical knowledge in pipeline operations, risk and pollution control, product metering, maintenance, product quality testing and pipeline shutdown procedures.

Key Training Responsibilities

As part of the learnership, the trainee will be trained to:

• Monitor and control risks and potential pollution incidents.
• Communicate and document the risk status of depots.
• Extract and capture information relating to risk-status reports.
• Apply company policies and applicable legislation relating to safety and risk.
• Monitor separator tanks.
• Detect leaks and spillages.
• Drain water from bund areas.
• Handle transmixtures and intermixtures.
• Operate company systems and software used for pipeline equipment control.
• Capture, verify and prioritise operational information.
• Plan and handle transmixtures and intermixtures.
• Assist with blending and tanker loading of intermixtures.
• Perform scheduled and unscheduled minor maintenance.
• Test, lubricate and repair equipment where required.
• Launch and receive pigs and spheres.
• Follow procedures for isolating, draining and opening equipment.
• Operate product metering equipment.
• Check product metering equipment and capture relevant information.
• Monitor pipeline shutdowns.
• Respond to substandard conditions and implement corrective action.

Requirements for the Transnet Trainee Controller Learnership

Applicants must meet the following educational requirements:

• Grade 12/Standard 10 with Mathematics and Physical Science, OR
• N3 Technical Engineering in one of the following fields:
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Metering Control & Instrumentation
• Must pass a competency assessment covering:
  • Technical ability
  • Numerical reasoning
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Abstract reasoning
• Good command of the English language.
• Valid Code 08–10 driver’s licence.
