About the Position
Ampath Laboratories is hiring a Lab Assistant – Prelab for its Benoni operation. The successful candidate will support laboratory activities including specimen preparation, laboratory administration, housekeeping and other pre-analytical processes.
The position requires an experienced laboratory professional who can work accurately, follow procedures and contribute effectively to a busy pathology laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
The Lab Assistant will be responsible for:
- Receiving and preparing laboratory specimens.
- Assisting with pre-laboratory processes.
- Performing required special procedures.
- Supporting daily laboratory operations.
- Maintaining a clean and organised work area.
- Following laboratory health and safety procedures.
- Supporting administrative duties when required.
- Ensuring specimens are handled correctly and efficiently.
- Following established quality and operational procedures.
- Working effectively with laboratory colleagues.
- Maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Supporting the smooth flow of specimens through the laboratory.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 qualification.
- Registration with the HPCSA as a Laboratory Assistant.
- 2–3 years’ experience in a pathology laboratory is essential.
- Good English communication skills.
- Ability to perform basic numerical calculations.
- Ability to work accurately under pressure.
- Good teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to follow laboratory procedures and instructions.
Experience Required
Previous experience in a pathology laboratory is an important requirement for this position. Candidates should be familiar with laboratory environments, specimen handling and the importance of accuracy when working with diagnostic materials.
Experience should demonstrate the ability to work consistently within established procedures while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Role Responsibilities in Detail

The Lab Assistant will also contribute to maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment. Work areas should remain organised, and required procedures must be followed consistently.
Administrative support may form part of the position, depending on the operational requirements of the branch. Candidates should therefore be comfortable performing both laboratory-related and supporting administrative duties.
The role requires consistent attention to detail because errors in specimen handling or documentation can affect the laboratory workflow. The successful candidate must therefore demonstrate accuracy and responsibility in daily duties.
Working Conditions
This is a 45-hour-per-week position based on a 6-day working week.
The successful candidate may be required to work:
- Weekends.
- Public holidays.
- Different shifts or operational hours as required by the laboratory.
Candidates should therefore be flexible and able to meet the operational requirements of the branch.
