Momentum Group is inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for a Cost Accountant position based in Centurion, Gauteng. The role is offered on a temporary basis within Momentum Investments and combines financial accounting, management accounting, expense analysis, reconciliations, reporting and budgeting support.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accurate accounting records, managing purchase ledger and payment activities, preparing month-end journals and reconciliations, analysing P&L and expenses, and supporting budgeting and forecasting processes.

Role Purpose
The Cost Accountant will own and deliver accurate purchase ledger, payment, banking, month-end and expense-accounting activities.
The position also involves management-accounting responsibilities such as preparing journals and reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting support, P&L and expense analysis, and providing variance commentary to relevant stakeholders.
Requirements
Applicants should have:
- BCom Accounting, BCom Cost and Management Accounting, or BCom Finance
- An equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification may also be considered
- At least 3 years’ experience in management accounting
- Experience working in a financial services environment
- Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills
- Familiarity with systems and tools such as:
- IDU
- JDE
- Sun Systems
- Power BI
- ClickView
Key Responsibilities
Purchase Ledger, Suppliers and Payments
The successful candidate will:
- Manage the end-to-end purchase ledger process.
- Process and control supplier and intercompany invoices and payments.
- Process staff expenses and corporate card transactions.
- Ensure invoices and expenses are properly supported, coded, verified and authorised.
- Prepare payment runs and arrange the required approvals.
- Create or upload payments on accounting and banking systems.
- Handle supplier queries and reconcile supplier statements.
- Serve as a finance contact for internal and external queries.
- Maintain purchase ledger, payment and supplier-management procedures.
Banking, Cash and Intercompany Accounting
Responsibilities include:
- Recording bank payments and receipts accurately in the general ledger.
- Maintaining appropriate banking documentation and audit trails.
- Preparing bank reconciliations.
- Investigating and resolving reconciling items.
- Processing and reconciling intercompany payments and group recharges.
- Managing salary recharges and expense transfers.
- Maintaining controls over foreign-exchange rates used in accounting records and reconciliations.

Month-End and Balance-Sheet Accounting
The Cost Accountant will:
- Prepare and upload month-end journals.
- Process accruals, provisions, prepayments, expense allocations, corrections and recharges.
- Review journal allocations against applicable policies and controls.
- Correct inaccurate cost-centre and general-ledger allocations.
- Prepare balance-sheet and trial-balance reconciliations.
- Maintain and reconcile the fixed-assets register.
- Recommend improvements to fixed-asset management.
- Support month-end and year-end close activities.
- Escalate issues appropriately and ensure deadlines are met.
P&L and Expense Reporting
Duties include:
- Own monthly accounting activities for designated entities or business areas.
- Prepare and analyse monthly P&L and expense reports.
- Identify trends, anomalies, opportunities and financial risks.
- Provide clear variance commentary.
- Explain movements and relationships in financial reports to stakeholders.
- Prepare management and controller reporting packs.
- Perform expense and margin analysis.
- Compare actual results against budgets and other relevant financial measures.
- Support revenue verification, recognition and reconciliation where required.
Budgeting, Forecasting and Business Partnering
The role will also support:
- Annual expense budgeting.
- Periodic forecasting processes.
- Preparation of budgeting schedules.
- Historical trend analysis.
- Validation of budget submissions.
- Monthly expense reporting.
- Actual-versus-budget and forecast variance analysis.
- Budget consolidation.
- Resolving errors or omissions with stakeholders.
- Providing finance guidance to budget holders and non-financial stakeholders.
- Building productive relationships across business units.
Controls, Audit and Process Improvement
The successful candidate will:
- Maintain financial controls covering payments, banking, journals, expenses and reconciliations.
- Prepare year-end audit files and supporting documentation.
- Respond to audit queries.
- Assist with VAT and other tax-related matters within the role’s scope.
- Escalate complex system issues and manage them through to resolution.
- Administer relevant system access and authorisation controls where assigned.
- Maintain and improve finance process documentation.
- Contribute to automation and operational efficiency initiatives.
- Identify financial risks and control weaknesses.
- Provide practical recommendations for improving processes and controls.
- Participate in ad hoc finance projects and provide wider team support.

Who Can Apply?
This opportunity is suited to finance and accounting professionals who hold a relevant BCom or equivalent NQF Level 7 qualification and have at least three years of management-accounting experience, preferably within the financial services sector.
