Purpose of the Job

  • Manage all allocated High Court matters within the RAF.
  • Provide litigation services and legal advice.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions.
  • Perform taxation-related services, including tax bills of costs.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable South African laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Research and prepare litigation matters for trial.
  • Consult with client departments, representatives and witnesses.
  • Draft pleadings and other legal documents.
  • Manage and participate in mediation processes.
  • Represent the RAF in third-party claims and related litigation.
  • Attend court appearances, tribunals, mediation hearings and inquiries.
  • Manage legal files from opening through to conclusion.
  • Approve instructions for expert witnesses and assessors.
  • Assess files early and recommend appropriate settlements.
  • Provide legal advice on contracts and other legal matters.
  • Prepare legal opinions and conduct legal research.
  • Provide taxation services in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Prepare reports, briefings, presentations and other documentation.
  • Manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support the recruitment, development and performance management of staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law or equivalent.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Law or equivalent.
  • Admission as an Attorney of the High Court.
  • Right of Appearance in the High Court.
  • 5–7 years of relevant legal experience after graduation or admission.
  • At least 2 years of experience in the relevant area of expertise.
  • Experience in Personal Injury Litigation is required.
